The 7 best river beaches near Caniçada — with driving times from Casa de Fundões

River and reservoir beaches we actually send Casa de Fundões guests to — not a generic Gerês roundup.

Casa de Fundões sits a few minutes from Rio Caldo, on the stretch of the Caniçada reservoir shore that keeps to itself once the day-trip buses turn off toward the park gates. When guests ask which beach to pick, the honest answer is not “the best one” — it is the one that matches how far you want to drive and how many people you want to share the water with.

The closest option is barely a beach day at all: Praia Fluvial da Barca, about five minutes away, rents canoes, paddleboards and small boats for a couple of hours on the reservoir. A little further along the same road, Praia Fluvial de São Pedro, Granja e Paços is the quiet, unglamorous one — a stretch of shoreline with no bar and no crowd, which is exactly the point on a hot Saturday.

Ten to fifteen minutes gets you to Praia da Ilha do Gerês, known locally as Praia de Ipanema or Praia da Barragem, roughly halfway between Rio Caldo and Caldas do Gerês. A small wooded island sits just off the shore, which is why it photographs better than anywhere else on this list — and why it fills up first on August weekends.

Another five or ten minutes past the bridge toward Vila do Gerês are the two beaches that actually carry Quercus gold-quality ratings: Praia Fluvial de Vilar de Veiga and Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão. Alqueirão is the one every Gerês list calls “the best beach in the park,” and on a quiet Tuesday it earns that. On a busy Sunday it mostly means more cars parked along the road, so we send families there early, or not at all in August.

If the plan is to be on the water rather than beside it, the small Marina de Rio Caldo, five minutes from the house, is where the boat and paddleboard rentals actually are. And if none of the above fit — too far, too busy, too much gear to unload — there are unmarked pull-offs along the N308 shoreline between Rio Caldo and the beaches above: no name, no facilities, just a patch of bank and somewhere to park.

None of these beaches have lifeguards outside the busiest summer weeks, and the bathing season really only runs from June to September. Go before lunch in August, and remember the pool at the house is always the fallback once a beach fills up or the drive back starts to feel long.
