Mondim de Basto from Casa Amarela — Senhora da Graça, the Fisgas, and the Olo river

Casa Amarela is the small house in our collection — two bedrooms, sleeps five, a terrace and a pool — and that shapes the kind of days that work here. Mondim de Basto is not a place you rush between sights; it works better with one outing in the morning and the terrace in the afternoon.

The Mondim classic is Senhora da Graça, on top of Monte Farinha at 947 metres. The sanctuary standing there now dates from 1775, built in local granite, and you can drive the whole way: take the N312 toward Cerva, then turn right for the climb, which spirals around the mountain to the top. It is roughly 13 kilometres from the town. That is why it is our first suggestion for anyone who wants a view without a hike — if you would rather walk up, the PR1 Caminhos da Senhora da Graça is about 6 km one way, graded moderate. Cyclists know this climb from the Volta a Portugal.

Fisgas de Ermelo is the region's headline attraction, and the point where it is worth being blunt. The falls on the Olo river drop around 400 metres and are among the tallest in the country, but the official trail, the PR3, is a 12.4 km loop with about 650 metres of ascent and roughly 4h30 of walking, graded hard. It is not an after-lunch stroll. If you do it, start early, bring real water and real shoes, and write off the day. Spring and autumn beat August.

Even if you skip the trail, the village of Ermelo is worth the drive: schist houses with slate roofs at 450 metres, inside the Alvão Natural Park. It is about 17 kilometres from town on the N304, some 25 to 30 minutes on a mountain road best driven slowly. The park was created in 1983 and covers around 7,200 hectares, from the Lamas de Olo plateau above 1,300 metres down to the greener, lower Olo valley.

For water there are two options, and they serve different purposes. Praia Fluvial do Rio Olo, by Ponte d'Olo near Ermelo, has shade, spots to jump in, a small patch of sand, a bar with a terrace almost over the river, and allows dogs — it is the natural stop on the way back from the Fisgas. Praia Fluvial de Mondim, on the Tâmega, sits beside the town with a small weir and green space around it: less pretty, far closer, and the one that makes sense when you just want a swim before heading home.

One practical warning we always give: the river beaches here are unsupervised for most of the summer, and the bathing season is short. With small children, the Olo has deep sections next to the jumping spots — the pool at the house is still the easiest place to spend a whole afternoon.

If you are weighing Mondim against Gerês, the difference is traffic and scale: Alvão is closer, quieter, and needs nothing booked in advance. That is why Casa Amarela suits a couple or a small family who want one outing a day and nothing more planned than that.
