Things to do in Celorico de Basto from Casa de Pelicas
The Tâmega ecotrail, Arnoia Castle and river beaches — what is actually close to the house.
Casa de Pelicas sits in a part of Minho built around a river valley and an old railway line rather than a national park, so the outings here are shorter, flatter, and easier to fit around a long lunch at the house.
The Tâmega ecotrail runs 39 kilometres along the old railway bed, mostly flat and fully rideable, with the Celorico de Basto station working as its unofficial kilometre zero: about 17km north to Arco de Baúlhe, and around 22km south toward Amarante. You do not need to cover all of it — an hour out and back from wherever you join it covers most of what makes the ride worthwhile.
Praia Fluvial de Fermil de Basto is the closest river beach to the house, well under two kilometres away on the Veade river, with a support bar and parking but no lifeguard. It is the one we point guests to when the plan is a swim before or after lunch rather than a whole afternoon out.
Castelo de Arnoia is a short drive from the house. What is left standing is a keep, a square tower, a single gate and an old cistern, built around the turn of the eleventh century to protect the nearby monastery and abandoned for good in 1717, when the seat of the municipality moved to Britelo. It is a National Monument, and honestly, an hour covers it properly.
Alto do Viso is worth timing for late afternoon; it is the viewpoint over the Tâmega valley we send guests to for the light rather than for the walk itself.
None of this needs a full day, which is the point: Celorico rewards a slower pace than Gerês, and the house — long tables, a working fireplace, a pool in the garden — is built for the hours between outings, not just the nights.
